Our take

Maison Violet’s CYCLE 002 opens with a citrus slap: bitter orange, mandarin, bergamot, and lemon all jostling for attention, tart and slightly sharp. That zesty freshness doesn’t last long before the spices crash in. Black pepper, cumin, cloves, chili pepper, and elemi turn the volume up to a sweaty, aromatic heat that feels almost edible, like a market stall where dried chillies hang next to rough wooden crates. The cumin especially pushes into dirty territory, bold and unapologetic. As it dries down, incense and guaiac wood smolder beneath labdanum and cedar, creating a smoky, balsamic base that’s warm but never sweet. The overall character is that of a weathered leather journal left open on a sun-warmed pew in an old stone chapel, pages curling with heat and dust. It feels natural and niche, less polished mainstream blend and more a study in contrasts. The sillage is soft and the longevity modest, so it stays close like a secret rather than a declaration. Best worn in fall and winter, when its warmth can wrap around you, though it works well in spring too. This suits someone who enjoys intimate, challenging scents and doesn’t mind reapplying. Skip it if you need projection or longevity, or if cumin makes you flinch. A fragrance that rewards closeness.
