Our take

Night Aoud opens like a velvet-lined jewelry box hit by a shaft of afternoon light: peach and ylang-ylang blur into a honeyed, almost jammy sweetness, while nutmeg and citrus flicker at the edges like tiny sparklers. That lush floral curtain parts quickly to reveal the smoky, animalic scrape of oud, but this isn’t a barnyard brawler. Jean-Claude Astier has tamed the agarwood with creamy sandalwood and earthy patchouli, so the heart feels more like a whispered secret than a shouted decree. The dry down settles into a warm, powdery amber laced with vanilla and labdanum, soft enough to hug the skin but persistent enough to leave a ghostly trail for a few hours.

Here’s the rub: with a longevity rating of 3.58 and sillage barely scraping 3.45, this is a shy oud, a fragrance that prefers proximity over projection. It’s beautifully blended, undeniably quality, but the numbers don’t lie. If you want a beast that announces your arrival three rooms ahead, look elsewhere. Night Aoud works best as an intimate evening companion for fall or winter, especially on cooler nights when its sweet warmth can unfurl without fighting humidity. It suits someone who loves floral-woody contrasts but finds most ouds too aggressive. Skip it if you crave bombast or live in a climate above twenty degrees. A perfectly pleasant, softly opulent scent that never quite commits to the drama its name promises.
