You stand on a rain-slicked stone quay where the air tastes of cold river water and damp wool. The person beside you shifts, and a sharp, bitter grapefruit rind cuts through the mist, quickly followed by the dry bite of black pepper and the metallic heat of saffron. As the wind dies down, a heavy resinous smoke begins to rise from the coat collar. Frankincense and elemi burn slowly, smelling of ancient chapels and sun-baked tree sap. The scent does not leap outward to announce itself across the dock, but it creates a dense, intimate atmosphere around the shoulders that lingers in the damp air.
Beneath the smoke, the ground feels scorched. Cade oil and vetiver push up through the mineral heart, smelling of charred wood and wet earth, while atlas cedar and sandalwood provide a sturdy, timber foundation. Labdanum, styrax, and ambergris add a deep, golden weight that feels warm against the chill, sticking to the fabric and refusing to fade as the afternoon passes. You remain in this spot, wrapped in the smell of a cliff edge where a fire has been lit on wet slate, the smoke clinging to your sleeves as the tide turns below.
