Our take

Zino dates from 1986 and it shows, in construction rather than in datedness: a full aromatic fougere built with real materials, not the thin citrus-and-musk formulas that came to dominate men's fragrance later. Brazilian rosewood and lavender open dry and herbal, clary sage adding an almost tea-like bitterness, bergamot the only real brightness in the mix.

Rose, geranium and jasmine take the heart into softer floral territory without ever turning sweet, lily-of-the-valley keeping it fresh, and this middle stretch reads more masculine floral than most fragrances released today would attempt. The base is where Zino spends the rest of its life, and it is dense with material: patchouli and sandalwood build a dry, woody foundation, vanilla adds just enough sweetness to soften the patchouli's edge, and cedar keeps the whole thing structured, a dusty, old-world backbone newer fougeres tend to skip. This drydown is rich and old fashioned, closer to a tailored wool coat than to anything modern and clean.

It settles in for a long run on skin, and its reach stays modest, present within a small, steady radius around the wearer. That combination, old-school materials with a reach that never overwhelms, makes it a good choice for the office as much as for evenings. Younger noses used to sweeter, louder orientals may find it stiff at first.
