Our take

You get the sense that Mugler’s A*Men Ultra Zest was designed to thumb its nose at the brooding, tar-thick flank-mates that defined the line. The opening is a shriek of blood orange and tangerine, sharpened by ginger and a mentholated mint that feels less like a garden and more like a dentist’s waiting room – bright, synthetic, and unapologetically aggressive. Then the coffee heart stirs in, not a rich pour-over but a vending-machine espresso cut with cinnamon’s red-hots sting and a pinch of black pepper. The drydown is where it softens: patchouli and tonka bean wrap the vanilla into something caramelized and dusty, like a candy wrapper left to melt on a warm sidewalk. The overall character is a citrus-soaked espresso poured over a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream – loud, sweet, and slightly confused about its own identity. It feels thoroughly synthetic and proudly mainstream, a teenage rebellion in a bottle rather than a refined wardrobe staple. The longevity holds at a decent three and a half hours, but the sillage barely reaches an arm’s length; you smell it mostly on yourself. That makes it perfect for a spring afternoon or a bright summer evening, worn by someone who wants to feel energized rather than seduced. Skip it if you prefer subtlety, mature wood, or anything that doesn’t announce itself like a skater punk at a library.
