Our take

Masumi by Coty opens with a curious clash of chilled pineapple and melon against the warm, almost rosiny bite of palisander rosewood, the bergamot pulling everything into a sour-sweet tension that feels distinctly late sixties. That fruit is just a decoy. Within minutes the heart turns plush with cardamom’s dusty spice and a violet that reads more cosmetic than floral, the rose holding back like a guest who hasn’t decided whether to stay. The dry-down is where this fragrance finds its true voice: oak moss and cedar drag it into the soil, while amber and vanilla wrap the whole thing in a powdery, almost melancholic warmth. It’s the smell of a silk scarf left overnight on a mossy log, soft and a little damp.

This is not a fresh or lightweight composition. The accords are woody, mossy, and earthy, with a sweet amber underbelly that keeps it from tipping into full broom-closet austerity. It feels natural in its syntheticness, like the best of mainstream mid-century chypres, and it wears close to the skin after an hour. The longevity is moderate and the sillage polite, which is the honest weakness here: you have to enjoy reapplying to keep the moss-and-vanille cocoon alive. Fall is absolutely its season, but a cool spring evening works too.

Masumi suits someone who craves quiet elegance with a green, slightly powdery edge, not a floral bombshell or a dessert gourmand. Skip it if you need projection or a bright, modern freshness. Wear it to an afternoon spent leafing through vintage books, or a dinner where you want to lean in rather than announce yourself.
