Our take

Purgatorio by Tada Parfumeur opens with a sharp, luminous lift from aldehydes that cuts through the heavy resinous start. Frankincense and incense arrive immediately, dry and slightly medicinal, supported by a mix of resins that feel thick rather than sweet. The aldehydes keep the entrance from feeling flat, adding a crisp edge to the smoke and gum. It is a direct opening that does not ease the wearer in slowly.

The heart introduces guaiac wood and cedar beneath the continuing incense, with Thailand oud adding a deep, damp wood character and leather lending a firm, slightly rough texture. Labdanum and amber in the base bring a golden weight, while myrrh and sandalwood soften the sharper edges of the cade oil. The overall impression is amber first, then woody and balsamic, with warm spice and aromatic touches that never become bright or fresh.

The materials lean synthetic in their polish, especially the aldehydes and the leather, which lack the irregularity of natural sources. The composition is dense and unyielding, offering little space between its notes once the structure settles. It suits a cold evening walk under streetlights or a quiet indoor setting where the air is still. The lack of nuance means the fragrance stays within a narrow band and does not reveal new facets as it sits on the skin.
