Costus
Dirty hair, damp wool, old leather and earthy roots, with a warm animal-like edge.
Where it comes from
Usually recreated with aroma chemicals because natural costus root oil is heavily restricted.
Worth knowing
Despite its name, it comes from Saussurea root, not the Costus flower genus.
IFRA rules
IFRA prohibits Costus root oil, absolute and concrete in fragrance, citing dermal sensitization.
From the IFRA Standards, 51st Amendment. A perfume that lists this note may use a synthetic version the Standard does not cover.
