Ange Ou Demon Le Secret opens on black tea and cranberry, a slightly bitter, dry start next to the citrus of lemon, grapefruit and orange. Bernard Ellena built this version for Givenchy in 2014, and the tea note is unusual enough to carry the whole opening before the florals arrive. Jasmine sambac, peony, water lily and rose move in gradually, softened by hedione into a pale, diffuse wash rather than a bouquet of distinct flowers, each one blurred into the next.
White musk, white woods and a touch of patchouli keep the base clean and pale, with vanilla adding just enough warmth to stop it feeling cold or clinical. It works best in spring and summer daylight, favoring bright mornings over any evening plan, and it wears just as easily over a plain cotton shirt as under a jacket. Staying power is moderate, holding its outline for a while before fading into a soft musk, while the sillage forms a small, hushed presence, noticeable mainly to whoever is sharing that quiet space with you. Steam rises from a china teacup of jasmine tea left on a bright windowsill, tea leaves still visible at the bottom.
