Our take

Not Vanilla announces itself with a sharp, medicinal slap of camphor cut by nutmeg’s spark and bergamot’s citrusy wince. This is not a timid entrance. The name dares you to expect a sugary gourmand, but the opening is a cold winter windowpane against which vanilla later presses its nose, never fully let inside. Juniper and violet bring a dusty, almost rooty freshness to the heart, while cedar adds a dry plank that keeps the vanilla from turning into frosting. On my skin, the base settles into a soft, salted praline glaze over mossy soil, with cetalox and amber providing a clean, slightly synthetic warmth that feels more like a memory of sweetness than the thing itself.

The overall impression is a fragmented snapshot: a wooden porch after rain, someone eating caramel candy in a camphor-soaked sweater. It smells neither fully natural nor aggressively synthetic, occupying a niche that leans designer in structure but indie in attitude. Longevity is modest, about four or five hours before it fades to a skin musk, and sillage hovers close. This is a fragrance for the person who wants a whisper of gourmand without committing to dessert, best worn on breezy spring afternoons or crisp autumn evenings when the camphor can cut through the air. Skip it if you crave a vanilla that eats the room. This one prefers to be overlooked, then missed.
