Rouge Smoking's name gestures at something the fragrance itself never actually delivers. There's no smoke in the notes, only a bright cherry and pink pepper opening over bergamot, tart before the vanilla arrives, the cherry staying bright and juicy through the first few minutes. Pink pepper gives the opening a faint, spicy prickle alongside the cherry.
Black vanilla husk, heliotrope and orange blossom fill the heart, and the vanilla here comes across dark and slightly bitter, closer to the actual pod than to a dessert flavoring. Its sillage stays modest and close, caught easily by whoever you're standing beside, and the orange blossom keeps a faint brightness running under all that vanilla weight.
Tonka bean, cashmere wood, white musk, ambroxan, violet and labdanum round out a soft, powdery, almond-tinged base, the violet adding a faint powderiness that softens the darker vanilla, and the cashmere wood keeps a soft, fuzzy texture running under the sweeter elements. It holds for a fair, unhurried stretch on skin, and cold evenings suit it best, when the dark vanilla has the right backdrop to feel warm.
