Our take

Nutmeg, mace and plum give Secret Obsession a spiced, dark-fruit opening before a wall of white flowers, tuberose, jasmine, orchid, ylang-ylang and orange blossom, takes over the heart. Rose and plum up top add a dark, jammy edge before the white flowers fully take hold, so the opening never reads purely floral. It's a dense, heady combination with a warm, slightly overripe richness, nothing fresh-cut about it, and an animalic warmth underneath gives the florals a skin-like heft instead of a powdery cleanness.

Sandalwood, amber, cashmere wood and wormwood anchor the base, joined by vanilla for a little sweetness against all that spice, wormwood giving the drydown a faint bitterness that runs under the sugar. Endurance lands in the fair-to-middling range, and its throw is contained, noticed by anyone within easy reach.

Anyone who finds white florals overwhelming should sample carefully first, but fans of a dense, spiced tuberose will find plenty to like. Cold evenings suit it best, and it wants a fair amount of confidence, since tuberose this loud isn't a note that fades into the background. The amber and cashmere wood carry the finish, warm like a wool coat pulled out of storage for the first cold snap of the year.
