Our take

Animale Animale opens with a slap of green, almost medicinal bitterness from coriander and hyacinth over a sharp, citrusy neroli. This is not a gentle introduction. It is brash, green, and slightly sour, like snapping a fresh stem of rue. The Brazilian rosewood lends a strange, watery woodiness that feels synthetic in the best way, a nostalgic eighties boldness. Within minutes, the heart rebels. A sticky, animalic honey rises, wrapped in thick, indolic jasmine and a carnation so spicy it burns the nose. The rose here is not tender, it is a fat, blowsy bloom dipped in beeswax.

As the fragrance settles, the base reveals its true nature: a dirty, furry civet that grabs the oakmoss and patchouli by the throat. The coconut is barely a whisper, a sweet, powdery ghost that softens the vetiver’s dry earth. The overall effect is a memory of a woman’s velvet glove, worn thin and stained with perfume and cigarette smoke. This is heavy, unapologetically animalic, and feels like a relic from a more decadent era, a niche scent that never went niche because it was always mainstream in its heyday.

Longevity is excellent at over four out of five, but sillage is a moderate hum rather than a shout, making it wearable for day if you dare. The numbers suggest it is a winter and fall beast, perfect for cold air that makes the honey and civet bloom. Who should wear it? A woman who loves Shalimar but wants something rawer, less polite, more feral. Who should skip it? Anyone who thinks fragrance should smell clean. This fragrance does not smell clean. It smells alive.
