Our take

Begum by Xerjoff opens with a tart, almost abrasive pop of red berries and citrus, a fizz of lemon and bergamot that quickly gives way to freesia’s soapy white floral. Then the rose arrives, and it is a proper queen’s entrance: two roses, Damask and Bulgarian, lush and honeyed, draped in iris powder and ylang-ylang’s creamy sweetness. This is not a shy rose. It is a full, old-school chypre floral that feels like a silk sari heavy with gold thread, the kind that requires a room with high ceilings and a marble floor to carry properly. The heart is thick with lilac, jasmine sambac, and lily-of-the-valley, a bouquet so dense it nearly smothers the sharper notes. On the dry down, sandalwood and vanilla soften the edges, while patchouli and vetiver add a dusty, earthy counterweight. Amber and musk keep it warm, almost balmy. The longevity is excellent, well past eight hours, and sillage is moderate but present, a polite but unignorable aura. It is sweet, but the sweetness comes from flowers and vanilla, not sugar, with a powdery, woody spine that keeps it from tipping into cloying. This is not a blind buy, nor a casual reach. It suits someone who wants to be remembered, who dresses with intention. Skip it if you prefer crisp, fresh scents or modern minimalism. Wear it to a formal dinner in autumn or a spring evening when the air still has a chill, and let it settle into your coat like a lingering story.
