Our take

Brut by Faberge opens with a brisk slap of lavender and anise, sharpened by citrus and basil. It is a scent that announces itself with the confidence of a man who just got a fresh haircut and a new job. The heart softens into a barbershop bouquet of geranium and jasmine, with ylang-ylang adding a slightly sticky sweetness that keeps it from being purely austere. As it dries down, the base emerges warm and mossy: oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver, and a dollop of tonka and vanilla that rounds the edges without turning it into a gourmand. It is the smell of a leather armchair in a 1970s study, the ashtray still warm, the cocktail glass sweating on the side table.

This is a mainstream aromatic fougère through and through. It feels synthetic in the best way, a calculated composition that nails the fresh spicy woody accord without pretending to be anything other than what it is. The longevity and sillage are stubbornly average: you get a solid two hours before it retreats to a skin scent, and no one will smell you across the room. That is its weakness. It needs reapplication, especially if you want it to last a night out.

It suits the man who likes classic grooming, who wants a no nonsense scent for the office or a Sunday roast. Skip it if you require projection or complexity. Wear it on a crisp spring morning or a cool fall afternoon. It works for day, and for night if you are not trying to impress from a distance. After all, sometimes the best fragrance is the one you can still detect on your own collar hours later.
