Our take

Modern Muse Le Rouge Gloss opens with a burst of sour cherry so tart it almost snaps, but the carrot seeds and pink pepper quickly soften the edges into a powder-pink blush. The heart is where this fragrance does something genuinely strange: vinyl, that plasticky, synthetic note, sits right next to rose and leather, creating the sensation of pressing your nose against a glossy red handbag after a night out. Rose and jasmine try to keep things floral, but the vinyl refuses to behave, and that tension is the whole point. The base sinks into a warm, slightly nutty honey-vanilla with saffron’s metallic flicker and patchouli’s dust, though the labdanum and styrax keep it from going full gourmand.

This is a perfume that looks like a power suit but smells like the lipstick stain left on a leather jacket collar. It is sweet in a decidedly synthetic way, not natural or fresh, and its moderation on skin is its biggest weakness: longevity clocks in at around three hours, sillage stays close to the chest. It works best in cooler weather, fall through early spring, and leans slightly more evening than day, though it has enough spark to carry a lunch date if you reapply.

Who should wear it? Anyone who wants to smell like a cherry-scented record sleeve, who loves the idea of vinyl as a note and doesn’t mind that the honey and vanilla pull it toward the sweet side of noir. Skip it if you demand projection or prefer your roses au naturel.
