Our take

Ormonde Jayne’s Montabaco Flor opens with a bright, peppery snap of cardamom and juniper, the citrus of bergamot and orange barely sweetened by clary sage’s herbal lift. That brisk clarity quickly softens into a lush, almost dewy heart of tea, jasmine, and gardenia, with violet and water lily adding a sheer, petal-like transparency. The drydown is where the fragrance earns its name: suede and tobacco leaf wrap around a mossy, ambergris-laced base, while Iso E Super and sandalwood keep everything airy and vaguely skin-like. The overall effect is like a linen jacket that spent a spring night in a greenhouse, absorbing both damp florals and the faint, warm smoke of a last cigarette.

It’s a smooth, unisex floral that leans more natural than synthetic, though the Iso E Super does give it a modern, shimmering finish. The projection is polite at best sillage sits just above a whisper, and longevity is disappointingly modest three to four hours on my skin before it’s a close scent bubble. That restraint makes it ideal for the office or a lunch date, especially in spring or fall, but anyone who wants their fragrance to announce itself should look elsewhere. At a 4.01 rating, aficionados of refined, leather touched florals will find it quietly lovely. Just don’t expect it to last through a full day. 🌿
