Winstons presents a hurdle for anyone expecting a clean citrus opening. The tangerine and pink grapefruit arrive with a heavy, syrupy quality that feels more like candied peel than fresh fruit. That sweetness is immediate and unapologetic, sitting thickly on the skin rather than providing a bright lift. It is a dense start that can feel slightly cloying before the other elements have a chance to speak up.
Clancy Baxter composed a heart that tries to cut through that sugar with juniper berries, ginger, and eucalyptus. The spice blend of nutmeg, cardamom, and coumarin adds a warm, hay-like texture that pairs with the honey and violet. There is a distinct powdery iris note floating through the middle, giving the fragrance a soft, cosmetic edge. The transition feels busy, with the aromatic herbs fighting for space against the persistent floral sweetness.
Virginia cedar and sandalwood form a dry foundation, but the leather and tobacco are the true anchors here. Styrax and civet introduce a dirty, animalic warmth that pulls the entire composition into a darker, more rugged territory. It smells like an old leather armchair sitting in a room filled with drying herbs and sweet pipe tobacco.
