Our take

Black Beard opens like a blade being wiped clean on a leather apron. The artemisia and basil hit first, sharp and medicinal, before bergamot and petitgrain rush in to brighten the edge. It’s a bracing start, almost apothecary-raw, but the lavender and carnation heart pulls everything into a classic fougere groove, softened just enough by a ghost of rose. Then the drydown arrives: tobacco, moss, patchouli, and a tonka-amber sweetness that sits like a warm stone in your chest. The leather is there, but it’s more the smell of an old glove than a new jacket.

This is a fragrance that feels both nostalgic and freshly tuned. The sillage is present without being pushy, and longevity is solid enough to carry you from a late breakfast to an evening fire. Its weakness is a slight muddiness in the mid-heart, where the geranium and clove-like carnation can blur together into a dusty floral haze. The sweetness from tonka and amber also leans a bit syrupy in high heat, which is why the 100% fall vote makes perfect sense.

It suits a man who wants to smell like a well-kept wardrobe full of wool and worn leather, not like a nightclub. Skip it if you prefer transparent aquatics or anything fruity. Wear it to a bookshop in November, or a dimly lit pub where the drinks are brown and the conversation is low. It’s a fougere that doesn’t apologize for being a fougere, and sometimes that’s exactly the point. 🍂
