Our take

Grapefruit and mandarin orange open Eau du Soir briefly before the fragrance turns dark fast, oak moss, juniper and patchouli crowding into a heart already busy with pepper, carnation, iris, rose and jasmine. Musk and amber hold the base, and the whole structure reads as an old-school chypre built with real density, closer to a walk through wet autumn woods carrying one carnation than to a bouquet of any kind. Very little about the opening prepares you for how quickly it turns green and bitter.

The patchouli-and-oakmoss base is dense and durable, old-school chypre stubbornness carried right through to the end, and sillage is noticeable without being loud, present enough to be remembered by whoever shared a room with it. Fall carries the highest season figures by a wide margin, with winter close behind, and night dominates over day almost completely, marking this squarely as evening wear for cold weather.

Sisley built something unapologetically old-fashioned here, bitter and green rather than sweet, and the pepper and carnation give it a spiced, faintly medicinal edge under the florals, sharper than pretty. Jasmine and rose are in there too, but they never get to lead, always pulled back under the moss and patchouli.
