Our take

Prelude opens with a sharp, champagne-fizz of aldehydes and citrus, all crystalline sparkle and no apology. But that clarity dissolves fast as the heart steps in: a dense, plush tangle of carnation, cinnamon, and ylang-ylang, sweetened with rose and jasmine until the air feels syrup-thick. This is a perfume that wears its eighties birthdate with pride. The drydown is where it really lives, a powdery amber-vanilla cloud spiked with civet and patchouli, warm and slightly animalic, clinging to the skin like a cashmere shawl you forgot to take off. The overall character is that of a grand, slightly dusty velvet chaise in an unoccupied hotel bar, luxurious but a little faded. The sillage and longevity are moderate, around a 3.5 out of 5, which means it stays close and polite after the first hour. You will not smell it across the room, but you will catch a whiff of your own wrist all day. It feels natural in its sweetness, never synthetic, and sits squarely in a mainstream-ambered vintage lane. Who should wear it? Someone who loves a warm, spicy floral with backbone and doesn’t mind a whisper of civet funk. Who should skip it? Anyone under thirty or allergic to powder. Wear it on a cool autumn evening when you want to feel elegant without trying. Can a rush of old-school glamour still make you lean closer?
