Our take

Trayee opens like a spice merchant’s back room in the heat of noon — ginger and cinnamon bite first, then elemi and basil cut through with a green, almost sour snap. A black currant tang adds a fruity shimmer before the heart takes over. Cardamom, clove, and saffron roll out a dry, peppery warmth, while sandalwood and jasmine lend a creamy floral softness that keeps the spices from going feral. Bertrand Duchaufour builds this with the precision of a watchmaker: the incense and myrrh arrive slowly, not as a cloud of church smoke but as a resinous, almost metallic sheen over the base. Oud and vanilla lock into a velvety dark amber, with vetiver and oakmoss anchoring the whole thing in cool earth.

This is not a loud fragrance. With sillage rated just above 3, it sits close to the skin, a quiet luxury that rewards leaning in. Longevity is moderate — expect five to six hours before it becomes a ghost of itself. The sweetness is restrained, more balsamic than gourmand; it feels natural, even medicinal, like something ground in a mortar. It suits someone who wants a spicy oriental without the boozy bombast of modern niche. Skip it if you crave projection or sweet vanilla fireworks. Best worn in fall or winter, for a day at a museum or an evening dinner where you want to be noticed only when someone steps close. It is a layered, cerebral scent that asks for patience, and that may be its only weakness — not everyone will wait for the incense to bloom.
