Our take

Wormwood is an unusual choice to lead a men's fragrance with, bitter and a little medicinal, and Memoir Man leans into it hard alongside mint and basil, an opening that reads more like a cold, herbal tincture than the usual bergamot-and-pepper start men's fragrances default to. Karine Vinchon Spehner builds real tension here before rose and lavender soften the transition into the heart.

The base is where Memoir Man earns its reputation: tobacco, leather and guaiac wood turn genuinely smoky, with oak moss and amber adding a dark, resinous depth that lingers long after the wormwood has faded. It smells like the inside of an old wooden church, cold stone, incense smoke soaked into timber, and rose threads through as the one soft element in an otherwise hard composition.

Projection stays modest, noticed only by whoever is standing right beside you, and it holds on stubbornly once it settles, holding its shape well after the quiet, restrained way it opened. It isn't an easy, get-to-know-you scent, cold and a little severe at first contact, but the drydown rewards patience with real depth, tobacco and church-incense warmth settling in long after the wormwood is gone.
