Our take

Esprit du Roi opens like a fistful of crushed tomato vines and mint, all green snap and aldehydic fizz. The citrus ensemble never turns into a sweet lemonade stand; this is tart, bitter, almost astringent, with cardamom lending a dusty warmth. Within minutes, the heart introduces a clove-tinged geranium and a honeysuckle that feels more leaf than flower, keeping things in the aromatic, earthy lane. The drydown is where the wizardry happens: raspberry and oakmoss tangled together, a fruit that refuses to ripen fully, suspended over vetiver and a whisper of ambergris. The overall character is that of a damp English garden after a spring thunderstorm, green things bruised and fragrant, the soil turned up, a single raspberry crushed underfoot.

This is not a crowd-pleaser. It is sharp, bracingly green, and unapologetically Bertrand Duchaufour in that niche, vegetal way. The longevity is disappointing, barely three hours before it retreats to a skin-scent, and the sillage is polite at best. You will need to reapply, especially if you want the oakmoss and raspberry to linger through dinner. It wears best in spring and early summer, during the day, when the sun catches the green notes and prevents them from turning too sour. Suits someone who prefers smelling like a living hedge rather than a dessert buffet. Skip it if you crave sweetness, projection, or anything that announces itself from across the room.
