Jais opens with a startling green bite, petitgrain and galbanum slicing through a basket of overripe plum and mango. The cassis is tart, almost sour, and a whisper of basil keeps things herbal. Then the white flowers arrive in a rush, tuberose and jasmine and orange blossom all wrestling for attention, their sweetness thickened by raspberry. This is not a polite floral. It is a overheated garden at dusk, the petals dripping with nectar and something darker lurking in the shadows. The base note list reads like a Victorian apothecary’s hoard, civet and castoreum and labdanum and incense, and they do not disappoint. The drydown is a dusty, animalic fur coat thrown over mossy wood and vanilla, smoky and warm and just a little bit feral.
This is a heavy, unabashedly synthetic vintage affair, niche only in the sense that nobody makes them like this anymore. The longevity is respectable but not heroic, and the sillage hovers close to the skin after the first hour, which is merciful because a full blast would clear a room. It suits someone who misses the era of perfume as statement, not whisper. Skip it if you prefer citrusy transparency or anything described as airy. Wear it in the cool golden hours of spring or early autumn, when the air has enough weight to carry its richness without choking. Just one spritz on the chest, and let the day press it into your collar. Is there any greater pleasure than smelling slightly dangerous on a quiet Tuesday afternoon?
