Our take

Magie Noire opens with galbanum and cassis, bitter and dark before raspberry and hyacinth soften the entry, then narcissus, honey and tuberose crowd into the heart alongside cedar and orris root.

By the base, oakmoss, civet, patchouli, incense, myrrh, amber, vetiver, sandalwood and musk turn it into a dense, animalic chypre that reads far darker and older than most florals released since. This is a 1978 formula, and it wears like one, unwilling to soften itself for modern taste or trim down its own long list of notes.

The animalic base is tenacious, holding its intensity long after application, and sillage is noticeable, heavy enough that people catch it before they see you standing there. Winter and fall are its only real home, backed almost entirely by the night figures over the day ones; this is unambiguously an evening fragrance built for cold, dark rooms.

Honey and civet give it a warm, skin-like base that never turns clean, and the galbanum bitterness at the top never fully disappears, threading green through even the darkest, muskiest moments of the drydown. Tuberose and narcissus add a heavy white-flower presence in the heart that keeps surfacing between the mossier passages, a reminder this is a floral chypre underneath all that animalic weight.
