There is a specific kind of opulence that only a 1976 parfum can deliver, and Jean-Claude Ellena's First for Van Cleef & Arpels is that opulence distilled. It opens with a dramatic burst of aldehydes that fizz like champagne over a basket of bruised raspberries and peach, but the sharp, almost metallic black currant keeps it from tipping into syrup.
