Papyrus opens Gucci pour Homme (2003) dry and faintly dusty, like a box of old paper before the spices arrive. Ginger and artemisia cut through fast, giving the top a bitter green snap well beyond a simple aromatic.
The heart is where the composition earns its reputation. Cedar, sandalwood and patchouli build a woody frame, and orris root brings a powdery softness that stops carnation and jasmine from turning the whole thing floral. Pink pepper adds a warm prickle that never fully settles down.
Incense and leather carry the base into darker territory, amber, labdanum and oakmoss giving it weight, vanilla and tonka bean rounding the edges without adding real sweetness. It is long-lasting once it settles, the incense and leather holding their structure as the base takes full control, and the sillage stays modest, a close halo that moves with the wearer more than with the room around them.
Cold air is where it suits best, the incense and leather given room to push back against the chill, and it leans toward night more than daylight. The papyrus dryness from the opening never fully disappears, resurfacing under the incense long after the ginger has gone quiet.
